Hippocampus guttulatus (Caballitos de mar) Seahorses

Here is the second one we saw, a red seahorse.  It was also around 10 cm...and it was carrying its young in its abdomen!  Yes, male seahorses are the ones who give birth to its young.  The females transfer their eggs to the males, who fertilize the eggs and, when the time comes, give birth.

Este es el segundo que vimos, un caballito de mar rojo.  Medía unos 10 cm...¡y llevaba a sus críos en su abdomen!  Sí, los machos son los que paren.  Las hembras transfieren sus huevos a los machos, que los fertilizan y, cuando llegue el momento, dan a luz.
